Hindus believe in the theory of "mahurats" or auspicious times for every stage of life - be it a new activity or make a major purchase. Akshaya Tritiya is one such occasion, which is considered one of the most auspicious days of Hindu calendar. It is believed, any meaningful activity started on this day would be fruitful.

Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day of the bright half of the month Vaishakh (April-May), when the Sun and the Moon is in exaltation, they are both at their peak brightness, which happens only once every year.
Holy Day
Akshaya Tritiya, also known as "Akha Teej", is traditionally the birthday of Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. People perform puja special for this day, bathe in holy rivers, make a charity providing barley sacred fire, and worship Lord Ganesha and Devi Lakshmi on this day.

Myths Akshaya Tritiya
Day is also the first "SatyaYug" or the Golden Age - the first of four Yuga. In Puranas, the sacred Hindu scriptures, is a story that says that today, Akshay Tritiya, Veda Vyasa to Ganesha started writing the great epic of Mahabharata. Ganga Devi, the Mother Ganges descended to earth today.
According to another legend, during the period when Mahabhrata Pandavas were in exile, Lord Krishna on that day, presented a 'Akshaya Patra' a bowl that never go empty and produce an unlimited quantity of food upon request.
Krishna Sudama Legend
Perhaps the most famous stories Akshaya Tritiya is the legend of Krishna and Sudama, a poor Brahmin childhood friend. On this day, history, Sudam arrived at the palace of Krishna requested financial assistance. As a gift to his friend Sudama was nothing more than a handful of rice or poha beaten. "So I was very embarrassed to give Krishna, but Krishna took the roof of the house of poha" and their joys. Krishna has followed the principle of "Atithi Devo Bhava" or "the customer is like God" and treated like a king Sudam. His poor friend was so overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality of Krishna, you can not ask for financial support and returned home empty-handed. And presto! When he got home, Sudama-old cottage has been transformed into a palace! He found his family in royal attire and everything was new and expensive.
Sudama knew it was a blessing from Krishna, who blessed him with more wealth, he actually intended to ask. Akshaya Tritiya, therefore, concerns the acquisition of material goods and wealth.
